The architects designed the Normal School in a castellated Gothic style. Although simpler than the original drawings, Old Main retained the turrets, battlements, and towers of a castle, as well as the clustered windows and pointed arches of the Gothic style. Charleston’s Downtown Square has been the site of the Coles County seat since 1835. As a young lawyer, Abraham Lincoln practiced law in a previous version of the courthouse. Today, the late 19th-century Romanesque courthouse sits at the center of the square. Historic buildings display stunning architectural details and serve as home to current professional offices, unique shops, and restaurants.

We believe by trying to keep the building alive we are keeping history alive. The building was used as a place for people to go that needed help since 1916. We have not lost sight of that and hope visitors do not as well. Your relatives may have been part of the history of Coles County Poor Farm or Ashmore Estates and we want to remember them as you did.
